VETERANS DAY LETTERS

A great story: Will bring tears to your eyes and remind us all how dear our Veterans are:

Viet  Nam
 1966

Richard,  (my husband), never really talked a lot about  his time in   Viet Nam ,  other than  he had been shot by a sniper. However, he had a  rather grainy, 8 x 10 black and white photo he                                              had  taken at a USO show of Ann Margret with Bob Hope  in the background that was one of his treasures.

A few years ago, Ann Margret was  doing a book signing at a local bookstore.  Richard wanted to see if he could get her to
sign the treasured photo so he arrived  at the bookstore at 12 o'clock for the 7:30  signing.

When I got there after  work, the line went all the way around the   bookstore, circled the parking lot, and  disappeared behind a parking garage. Before her  appearance, bookstore employees announced that  she would sign only her book and no memorabilia  would be permitted.

Richard   was disappointed, but wanted to show her  the photo and let her know how much those shows  meant to lonely GI's so far from home.. Ann  Margret came out looking as beautiful as ever  and, as second in line, it was soon Richard's  turn.

He presented the book for  her signature and then took out the photo. When  he did, there were many shouts from the  employees that she would not sign it. Richard  said, 'I understand. I just wanted her to see  it.'

She took one look at the  photo,  tears welled up in her eyes and she  said, 'This is one of my  gentlemen from    Viet Nam and I most certainly will sign  his photo. I know what these men did for their  country and I always have time for 'my  gentlemen.''

With  that, she pulled Richard across the table and  planted a big kiss on him. She then made   quite a to-do about the bravery of   the young men she met over the years, how  much she admired them, and how much she  appreciated them. There weren't too many dry  eyes among those close enough to  hear. She  then posed for pictures and acted as if he were  the only one there.

Later at  dinner, Richard was very quiet. When I asked if  he'd like to talk about it, my big, strong  husband broke down in tears.. 'That's the first   time anyone ever thanked me for my time in  the Army,' he said.

That night was  a turning point for him. He walked a little   straighter and, for the first time in  years, was proud to have been a Vet. I'll never  forget Ann Margret for her graciousness and how  much that small act of kindness meant to my  husband.

I now make it a point to  say 'Thank you' to every person I come across  who served in our Armed Forces.. Freedom does  not come cheap and I am grateful for all those  who have served their  country.

If  you'd like to pass on this story, feel free to  do so. Perhaps it will help others to become  aware of how important it is to acknowledge the  contribution our service people  make.

Dear Friends. Mr. Gray's Behavior Class of Middle School and Junior High males have written tributes to you this Veteran's Day. These individuals have been removed from general campuses for violent/aggressive behavior and are at risk (or have been to) juvenile centers. This is their last chance. We are teaching them to reach out to others in order to improve ourselves. They are reaching out to you as you are their heroes. Please enjoy the letters and the thoughts. I have corrected their spelling but they are in their own words. God bless you all. Sincerely, Tracy Reyes (BAC Assistant) (:

I am proud that I was born in America, the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave. I have learned to live and love and dream and travel and be educated and worship God. I would not want to live anywhere else. I consider myself honored and blessed and especially free. I thank you for giving of yourself so we can live in peace. Sincerely, Tracy Reyes, BAC

A Salute to our Soldiers: My name is Kevin Gray and I am a teacher in Marshall, Texas. Approximately 15 minutes from Shreveport, LA. Good morning, and may the Blessings of God shower down down on you and your families. I am indebted to 2 of my brothers who served in the military many years ago. I am also indebted to you for the service you render to our country. I am constantly talking to my class about the military, and what I believe is the most admirable and honorable job in our country. Our country relies on each of you to protect and patrol our country. What a privilege! What an honor! What a request! Thank you, thank you, and again, Thank you very much. Kevin Gray, Teacher BAC, TX

Dear Military Service Member,

I would like to start this letter with a thank you for all that you have done for me. Although you do not know me and I do not know you in person, I know and appreciate all that you have done for our country. You and your fellow military service members are risking your lives for "We the People" and putting everything on the lines to keep out country free. Without people like you, who during the hard are willing to endure the tough, our country will not be what it is today. I thank you, again for all that you have done or are doing or will do. You deserved to be honored on this day because of what you have done. To me and along with every one in these United States of America I give you my up most respect and will always cherish what you have done or will do. You are a hero and don’t forget it.

Sincerely,

Rebecca Gonzalez

To an American Hero:

There aren't enough words to thank you for your sacrifice. As an American citizen I feel it is not only my right, but a duty to appreciate and honor the service you have committed to. I don't believe our society truly understands what you are fighting for. We've become such an instant-gratification country and don't realize that, without our Armed Forces, this life would never be possible. Personally, I want to thank you for the lifestyle you have guaranteed I can achieve by standing beside our astonishingly beautiful country. Because of you and the brothers and sisters you serve with, I, as a woman, am allowed to attend school and make a name for myself in this world. Without our freedoms, which you so valiantly protect, I would not have this opportunity. I am able to worship without shame nor fear and stand out in a crowd for my individuality. Not only are you protecting our Constitutional Rights, but our freedom of character as well. I think it's important for you to know that you are not under-appreciated. That the support from loved ones and citizens who grasp the fight of this country outweigh the cynics who believe we should let the world walk all over us. They are cowards who could never display the intrepidity our soldiers do. Thank you, for my life. For the absurd reality that a lower-middle class girl from Colorado could somehow miraculously go to school in Hawaii to study the ocean. That I can have a life that so many in third-world countries could only dream of having. You are protecting the rights of the American people that those before you and I fought to gain. I pray that you come home safely to your family and friends who, I'm sure, are unbelievably proud of you. If you're ever in Hawaii and need a tour, I'd be glad to escort an American Hero through one of our most beautiful states. You more than deserve only the best.

God Bless You and those who serve beside you.

Sincerely yours,

Shannon Clay

My name is Lisa and I just wanted to take a minute today to thank you for serving our country. I love this country and feel passionate about protecting it but could never be brave enough for combat! Thank you so much for doing such an important job. I just want to let you know that there are a lot of people rooting for you here at home and praying for your safe return. Stay strong! I cannot even fathom how difficult it must be to be away from home in a dangerous place. Just try to stay focused and positive and try to find humor in the little things. Also, never forget that you are a hero! I recently finished law school and took the bar exam in CA. I compared that experience to war but really what you sacrifice for our country is much greater than me sitting in a room taking a stupid test. Just know that I am thankful and realize that it is the work of people like you that makes my life so easy! I hope that as I start in my legal career I can do more to help veterans with the situations they face here at home. One more time... thank you so much!!!! Bump some good music and try to relax... You will be home before you know it!

dear all my soldiers

i would like to thank you for all you are doing for our world. in my mind, you are all heroes. i can't even begin to imagine what it must be like for you. people around me complain about everyday life, your life is so much different than ours at this moment its like you're a world away, but that is not true. every one of you are carried in minds and hearts everywhere and do not think that if you pass on you won't be remembered. if no one else, i will remember you because i believe that i am now in your debt, for you have saved me from a world that could be so horrible. Believe me when i say i think of you every moment possible, wishing you luck, and hoping for your safe return. i know that somehow or other, everything will turn out right, and not just for me, but for everyone.

thinking of you always,

Lara :)

Dear Soldier,

I feel honored to get the chance to write to you! I was in Union Square this morning and these people put lipstick on me and made me "kiss" a card and write a little letter and they are going to send them to our troops. This made think, "Why don’t I write to our troops." I love writing letters and no one seems to like receiving them but I think you will! And who better to hear back from or write to then you?

So let me introduce myself- my name is Maria Vincenza Vasaturo, I am a 20 year old Italian-American studying at Fordham University. I was born in Brooklyn raised in Staten Island and now I am living at school in the city.

I am not sure if you are allowed to write back to this BUT if you are I would like to know about you. Who are you? What is it that makes you happy? What is troubling you or just anything that’s going on in your life! I want to know it!!

If you can't write back to me , which will be so sad- I just want you to know that I appreciate you so much!! I love you and all your fellow soldiers. You are in my prayers back here in the U.S.A. I believe in you, I am here for you, just always know that you are loved and you are a hero!!!!!!!!!!!

XOXOXOXOXOXOX

Dear Veteran,

Since you most likely don’t know me I would like to tell you a little bit about myself. My name is Kristen, and I am from a small town in southeast Texas called Orange. I am twelve years old and I am in seventh grade. During and after school I play volleyball, basketball, and run crosscountry and track. Our volleyball team had eleven wins and one loss.

I appreciate everything you do for our country. It is great to live in a free country like America. It’s amazing how much we take for granted. Some people don’t even realize how much they actually have. Thank you for risking your life for America.

With gratitude,

Kristen TX student

Dear veteran

I just want to thank you for fighting for our country. I know at first that it was hard for you to leave your family. But Jesus had another plan for you. I just don’t now what to say but just thank you from the bottom of my heart. I will pray for you everyday. With lots of hugs and kiss with prayer I will think of you.

With love,

Deanna

Having been in the military myself and remembering those days of deployment I remember how long they can be. I was in the military for only three years. At the time we had just gotten over the war with Saudi Arabi yet troops were still being sent. I remember the feeling of, will I ever get to go home? I was very proud to be there and even prouder to serve my country and of the uniform I wore. If it were not for my weight issues at the time I believe I would still be in the military and possibly be right where you are now. Not a day goes by that I do not think of all of our military service men and women and how proud and thankful we are of each and every one of you. Since that time I have become an office manager and enjoy my job very much. I work hard and spend 12 to 16 hours a day at the office. I attribute my work ethics to my military background. I hope that this letter might bring a little extra smile to someones face today. Take care and thank you.

Dear, veteran

Thank you so much for all that you do to save our country. I’m sure you’ve done all that you can do to help us. On the news this morning their was a man who got mugged at gun point when the mugger looked in the mans wallet and saw the army id and gave everything back and said thank you for your service it still wasn’t the right thing to do but it was a lovely thing to say. Orange field loves you and I will pray for you and all others always.

Love, Marianne L. TX

Hello,

Today is Veteran’s Day, and I wanted to thank someone for their service… So thank you. I couldn’t imagine a life any other way that the one that I live from day to day. But there are days like today that make me take the time to reflect and appreciate the fact that it has taken many a sacrifice to secure the life I’m living. Thank you really doesn’t cover the gratitude that I have for all the troops serving our country, but until Webster creates a more heartfelt saying or word it’s the best I can do.

It is difficult for me to write this letter because I don’t know who will receive it and what type of person you are. Do you want to know about sports, current events, my life, or would you just appreciate a general ramble about life to remind you of the life you hopefully will be soon returning to.

So I’ll try and give you a little of everything and hopefully reading my chatter will lighten your day. To give you a little background on myself I’m from Ohio, married, my first baby on the way set to arrive in February, and I have an elementary teaching background. The weather here has been unseasonably warm which is nice it’s November 11 and today it was about 55 degrees. The grass is still green and the leaves are almost all done falling. The news keeps talking about El Nino being the cause of the warmer weather, whatever the reason though my husband and I have been enjoying the weather spending as much time outside as possible.

It’s been a somber football season at our house as we are Cleveland Browns fans… I think they are 1-7 for the season; the Cincinnati Bengals are fairing a bit better Ocho Cinco has been backing up at least some of his trash talking this year. Nascar has gotten boring between restriction plates and everyone changing teams, numbers, colors. And the poor Cincinnati Reds this year started well and then went downhill by the end of the season I don’t know if they had even half the team they started with mostly due to injuries but a couple of trades in there too.

Its deer hunting season around here, and we are in full swing. Which reminds me of a quick story of a prank my husband pulled on a friend… Robbie, my husband took his buddy Casey hunting when they were in high school. They leave camp very early to get set in their spots, Casey didn’t want to get up, they had stayed up a bit too late the night before. After a lot of encouragement though Casey got moving and started organizing his pack. Robbie asked if he had a roll of toilet paper in case he needed to go while in the woods. Casey was very adamant that he wouldn’t be doing that in the woods, that he had more ‘self control’ then that. Still moving slow he asked Robbie to make him a bowl of oatmeal… Robbie was getting a bit aggravated by this point and happened upon an exlax chocolate bar in their supplies and decided to melt it in the oatmeal. Casey none the wiser was quite tickled with his chocolate oatmeal and off they went to hunt.

They all usually meet back at the boat around lunch time, as Robbie turned the bend he caught sight of Casey huddled up next to boat. As he got closer he realized that he wasn’t wearing all the clothes he had started with. Casey was pale as could be complaining about the chili they ate the night before lighting him up. He said he started up the hill and it hit him and he had to stop and go, so he cut off the pocket of his hooded sweatshirt, walked a bit further had to go again cut off his hood… Well you get the picture of how Casey’s walk up the hill went but needless to say there he sat no hood, no pocket, no sleeves on his sweatshirt or the tshirt underneath, with the sweatshirt cut up about half of his waist. And to add insult to injury he hadn’t been quick enough on the draw a couple of times so he also had some poo on the back of his coveralls. To this day Casey still has no idea that the ‘problem’ he had that day was due to Robbie… But Robbie, his Dad, and his Uncle all had a good laugh about poor Casey that day. I’m sure it’s the last time Casey went hunting without toilet paper. True Story J

I hope this letter has given you a few moments of a mental break. I truly appreciate your service for our country and cannot thank you enough for your sacrifice. Know that you and your fellow soldiers are in my thoughts and prayers.

Thank you!!!

And again thank you for serving in the military and helping our country.

ear Veteran,

I hope you are doing well. We have just started basketball season. I like to play sports. I play softball, basketball, volleyball, and track. Last year my softball team placed 9th in the state tournament. At our school we are writing a paper over violence. If you win you get to go to Washington DC and meet the president! I am not going to enter the contest. I can’t wait for Thanksgiving break, it will be really fun. I hope you stay safe. Thank you for fighting for our country. We really appreciate it.

Sincerely,

Dear Veteran,

Thank you for your service in the military! It takes a strong, brave person to risk their life daily. I wish I was as brave as you. I used to know a man in the army. He was a doctor.

Is it hard in the army? Are you ever lonely? Just remember that there are people here that are supporting you.

I am doing ok. We just got done with football season. We were 4 and 4. It was a good season knowing I never played football before.

We just got started with basketball season and we are looking pretty good. The only thing is that all of the lazy people are going to quit.

I’ll bet it is hard to bear the weight of freedom on your shoulders every day. Do you have any good friends where you are right now? Just know that no matter how hard it is, no matter how intense it gets, no matter how lonely you get, we are always here appreciating you. Thank you so very much for your service.

Your friend,

Cade

Dear Military Service member,

Thank you so much for your time and commitment to serving the United States. I am very thankful that people like you are willing to give so much for people you don’t even know. It is nice to know that people in the United States, everyday will go out and fight for our freedom and protection. With out you we would loose so much that makes us Americans. Although we only celebrate the soldiers in war once a year on Veteran’s day, we still are great full and of course thankful. So when you are out on the battle field just remember all the people back home are thankful.

Dear Military Service Person,

I just want to say thank you… Thank you for all that you have sacrificed for our nation and the people who live here. You risk your life everyday for people you don’t even know, and that is the most selfless thing I can think of. Here in our 8th grade class they can only teach us about what is going on there, but you know, and it is probably not like Call Of Duty. Thank you soo much:)

In my 8th grade year I am learning about our nation’s history. And I would love you to know that we are really proud that you guys have been fighting for us! You guys really make a difference. Today in our school, we had a breakfast and invited veterans that are still alive to come and enjoy it. I was asked to sing the National Anthem and give a speech! And now we are extending our gratitude to you guys by writing letters! I find it really amazing how you have that much courage to fight! I would enjoy being in the Army, I would like to follow my dad’s foot steps, eventhough I may be a girl, I believe I can make a difference. I hope one day to be flying an Apache just like my father! You guys are amazing! Keep up the good work! Thanks once again, If you wish you may reply! I do have a few questions if you have time. How long have you been serving? What branch are you? Do you believe you feel as though people are grateful of your accomplishments? Thanks again.

Courtney

Dear Military Service member

I would like to think you for all the sacrifices you have made.

All the contributions you had made.

All the time you have spent behind enemy lines.

I want you to know that all you hard work will pay off.

And that I want to go in to the Military as well.

I will try to join the air force to fly the plans or to work on the flight deck.

I have a cousin in the air force but I don’t know what his job is.

Sincerely

Cody

Today is Veterans Day, and my family and I want to take this opportunity to thank you for all the sacrifices you (and your families) have made, both at home and abroad.

Personally, I have never understood "war", the willful killing of another human being for profit, land or religion. However, I do understand the need for war when it comes to defending your home, your family and the helpless. Because of people like you, our children can sleep at night without fear of mortar attacks. Because of people like you I can take my children to school without the fear of suicide bombers taking out the schools.

When they say "freedom is not free" I understand the great weight that statement carries. It carries the weight of all our fallen heroes throughout the ages, your brothers and sisters in arms, and all the victims of crimes against humanity.

On this day, please remember that you are greatly appreciated. Don't ever be discouraged. When your brother (or sister) falls remember that you will see him (or her) again. When someone spits in your face and curses you for being a soldier for freedom, please remember that there are so many more who would salute you. When the days seem so long and you begin to forget why you're there, please remember those that love you, depend on you and are waiting for you to come home.

Today and every day, we thank you. We love you. We salute you.

God bless you and keep you safe.

Dear Military Service member-

As a student in 8th grade American history class, I have been learning

about our nation’s history and the foundations of our government. The fact

that you are on the front line defending that nation makes me proud. Thank

you for being willing to serve and protect the things that are important to all

people - like freedom and happiness.

Without your service, I would not be able to enjoy all of the blessings

Of freedom that have been fought for by the many great people of the

United States.

I am very thankful for you and your family’s sacrifice to make sure that

We as Americans will always have our rights protected.

Our thoughts are with you, the men and women with you, the men and

Your families as we remember your sacrifice on Veteran’s Day 2009.

Stephen

Dear military service member,

Today is Veteran’s day and because of that, I have been thinking a lot about all the things you have done for our great nation. I thought, rather than trying to express how I feel in my own words, I would borrow those of another, who expressed herself better than I could.

They Did Their Share

On Veteran’s Day we honor

Soldiers who protect our nation.

For their service as our warriors,

They deserve our admiration.

Some of them were drafted;

Some were volunteers;

For some it was just yesterday;

For some it’s been many years;

In the jungle or the desert,

On land or on the sea,

They did whatever was assigned

To produce a victory.

Some came back; some didn’t.

They defended us everywhere.

Some saw combat; some rode a desk;

All of them did their share.

No matter what the duty,

For low pay and little glory,

These soldiers gave up normal lives,

For duties mundane and gory.

Let every veteran be honored;

Don’t let politics get in the way.

Without them, freedom would have died;

What they did, we can’t repay.

We owe so much to them,

Who kept us safe from terror,

So when we see a uniform,

Let’s say "thank you" to every wearer.

Dear Soldier,

I just want to say thank you for fighting in the war. i appreciate the sacrifice that you have made that many have not. it really means a lot to me to have people like you fighting for the country.

Hey Soldier, Hope your hanging in there being away from home and all. Yeah I would like to thank you for your service because I see myself in your shoes some day into the future of my life. I would like to thank you for my freedom that so many in the world never havce the chance to experience. Your fighting for some people back home that you have never met or will never meet. You fight for people who by fact would never fight for you but you have the courage to put your life on the line that you could be spending here back home but I see yourself as not of a selfish person but a hero so thank you for your duty and honor that I would once like to share with you on Veterans Day.

Thank you

Dear Soldier,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you. Thank you for putting your life on the line for the life and liberty of the American people. Thank you for sacrificing time with your loved ones to protect our freedoms. Thank you for devoting your life to ensuring the safety of this country and its people. Thank you for going days on end without the comforts that we often take for granted: sleep, adequate food, shelter, a warm bed, a hot bath, and simply the freedoms that you fight for each and every day. I hope for you the best of health, luck, and life. God speed.

Dear soilders,

Thank You,

Love Andrea!

Dear Sir or Madam.

I just wanted to say thank you.

Thank you for helping our country stay free.

Thank you for dying, so we dont have to.

Thank you for everything.

Some people might forget, But i wont.

I think its terrible how many Canadian and American Casualties we have,

Personally, Remembrance day is the saddest day of the yeaar.

I know that some people call it a holiday, but i find that disrespectful.

I know this is kind of a random letter, and you probably don't hve time to read a letter that some random 13 year old girl wrote to you, i mean, you'd probably much rather be reading letters that your family has sent you.

but thanks for taking the time to read it anyways :) <3

You know, some people may have Superman or Spiderman as their favorite heroes, But my favorite heroes are Soldiers, because they are REAL heroes.

YOU are a REAL hero.

So, i guess i'd better let you get back to saving the world,

Amy from ONtario, CAN
